In order to maintain your French language skills, continue your progress, and begin to put your knowledge into practice, the Ecole des Trois Ponts is offering online classes by Skype or Zoom. You can now learn French online with us!

These classes are available not only to our regular students of the school, but also to interested newcomers.

Why to learn french online ?

French learning online is a good solution for those who want to discover or practice the language without traveling, due to personal or professional constraints. For those who wish to prepare for a trip to France, it is also a good way to review the basics of French and gain the confidence to speak it. Learning French online has other advantages: you will have individual lessons with one of our teachers either on Skype or Zoom and the lessons are based on your level, your needs and your expectations.

French learning online: how to ?

The classes are composed of oral discussions, grammar, writing and vocabulary exercises as well as other activities depending on your individual needs. Since the classes are one-on-one, you also have time to ask your teacher any questions and receive the answers, using the microphone or the chat box. These tools are very practical for working on both oral and written aspects of French, to give you examples, corrections and suggestions to improve your pronunciation, accent, grammar and vocabulary in French. Your teacher can also help you discover French and its particular culture through idiomatic expressions and explanations of characteristics of French society.

Benefits of online french class

The online French courses we propose are tailor-made, they take place at a mutually convenient time for you and your teacher and they are a good way to practice what you want and to progress at your own pace. For 45 minutes, you can work on a lot of things: a one-on-one online course is very effective because you are often more focused on what you are doing and you find almost the same characteristics as a face-to-face course. We can interact almost as naturally as in a classroom and we can work with documents and internet links that we can send and that are used to complete the activities or to provide additional explanations. From New-York, USA

During a time without travel, it was wonderful to discover that Ecole des Trois Ponts also offers online instruction. With weekly one-on-one sessions based on a broad selection of increasingly complex reading in French, and with Vincent’s encouragement, I’ve become more fluid in written and oral expression.
The personalized course structure means that the topics are tailored to my interests and each session challenges and enriches my language skills. Highly recommended!

From Toronto, Canada

I have now had 7 online lessons with Ecole des Trois Ponts and I didn’t realize what a difference it has made taking weekly classes. I am retaining more French language skills and vocabulary because I am constantly working on it each day. I’m enjoying the new vocabulary, grammar, and nuances of French but I especially enjoy having “real” conversations with my teacher, Valérie, where there is always lots of laughter. Such a great way to spend an hour—great for improving my French and keeping me “in touch” with French.

From Bamako, Mali

I’ve been taking classes with Valérie for several months to prepare for an upcoming test. We’ve reviewed grammar, prononciation and listening comprehension. Very quickly, I noticed I was much more at ease when speaking and much more comfortable with grammatical structures that had always proved difficult. Thanks very much to Valérie for all her help!

Our class sizes and our methods of French immersion

What’s a French language program?

With more than 25 years’ experience, we believe that immersion is the most effective way of learning French. This means that you are encouraged to speak French from the moment you wake up on Monday morning and at every opportunity thereafter. That includes meal times, when socialising with other guests, when talking to staff members, the chef, even the gardener – EVERYBODY ! And because all our facilities (accommodation, classes, meals) are on-site, it’s easy to maintain immersion.

French Tutor at Board

In our lessons, active speaking practice is encouraged regardless of your level or ability. This engenders confidence in conversational skills and you are rapidly encouraged to try and speak in real-life situations. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation – a vital element in being understood. All our teachers are native certified French instructors who can explain grammar and vocabulary to beginners, in English, if necessary. Intermediate and advanced students speak only in French.

Classes are small to offer a maximum of speaking time and personal attention. You will be encouraged to speak French throughout the day – 14 hours a day – and then continue to speak French over a good meal and wine. The French-only rule at the dinner table for French-studying guests accelerates understanding through total immersion. What better way is there to learn to speak French than at a French table?

Class sizes in our French language school for adults

Our classes are either one-to-one or groups of no more than 6 per group (or 7 for university groups). This small number allows the tutor to provide individual attention and cater to the particular needs of each person.

The online French test

We have developed an online French test that all our French language guests are asked to complete before submitting their application form. If you score 7 or less, you are considered a beginner and we invite you to attend any of the beginner’s courses. If you score more than 7 then you can choose any of the remaining courses.

What to expect from your week(s) with us

Guests are invited to arrive on Sunday evenings. A warm welcome awaits you and you will be taken to your accommodation to settle in. At 7.30pm you meet your fellow guests for a three-course dinner prepared by our in-house chef.

Next morning, after breakfast, a private oral test is given to complete the assessment and guarantee that classes are as homogeneous as possible. Then it’s off to class! There’s a mid-morning coffee break, then back to class to finish at 12.30, in time for a tasty lunch. A welcome break after lunch is followed by French cooking courses or further French immersion classes, where applicable. For others not taking afternoon or evening classes, there’s the whole of France to discover, so take a bike ride, a drive, a train ride, or simply explore the local area on foot.

Dinners are at 7.30pm and are informal three-course meals with wine. After dinner, you’re free to go out or have an early night – whatever you prefer. Courses finish on Friday and you are encouraged to stay for Friday night’s dinner – a chatty, hearty affair. After breakfast on Saturday, it’s farewells all round as we wish you bon voyage!

One of the main frustrations met by many young or adult students learning French is the capacity to use the language on a daily basis at a level that allows them to be understood. It requires a method that makes it intuitive, fun and allows you to recognize the progress that you have made. The core of learning French is about listening and speaking; this why we focus on immersion into the language and using the language.

Being able to speak French, with correct grammar and adequate vocabulary, is a challenge for many people who engage in taking French courses or who engage in learning the language.

After years learning French at school, you hoped that on your first trip to France you would be able to manage to get around the country with a certain ease. Sure, you knew your French wouldn’t be perfect, but correct enough to understand the people, and make yourself understood by them.

But it didn’t go quite as expected: the accents you met, how quickly people spoke, the vocabulary that didn’t match what you learned in school, this was not what you thought speaking French was like.

There is a good reason for this. You learned French in a very specific environment that was not at all like speaking French in real life. Learning any language is a complex process, especially the French language that requires the use of more words than English to ensure your sentence is correct.

This is why at L’École des Trois Ponts, we focused the entire learning process on one concept: how to use what you learn in real life situations in a French environment with native speakers. In this process, there is a key element that is the ground base for learning French: building self-confidence by speaking with French natives, without feeling intimidated.

First, there is the immersion into France. The reason for this is to put you in a place that is surrounded by the French language. Unlike a school where the use of French is limited to the size of the classroom, by being immersed in France, the classroom is literally the entire country. To emphasize this aspect, L’École des Trois Ponts is located far away from Paris, the most English-speaking friendly city in France, in the countryside, where it will be difficult to avoid speaking French.

Second, the cooking courses. Sure, L’École des Trois Ponts is a French learning school in France, but it still needs to be fun. And if there is one fun activity to do in France, it is cooking. Our cooking classes also serve a purpose: it is the perfect moment to use what you learned during the French courses.

Thus, our method is simple, making sure that you enjoy speaking French by putting you in a context that will make you want using it. It has worked for all of our students.
