Hiking, a meditative activity
Walking and hiking is not just a way to keep your physical condition as good as possible, it also works as an excellent way to let you mind wander away as you go through your path.
Indeed, hiking is one of the best way to free your mind and meditate. If you take French lessons in France, you might want to have a partner with you to talk to, but hiking can also be an opportunity to keep silent and let your brain digest your newly acquired language skills and start thinking by yourself in French.
Meditation is a way to impregnate yourself with new information, and hiking allows to increase this capacity in a much easier way. The efforts required to walk allows your mind to focus less on the least important details and lock on the basics, like the panorama you see, the landscapes you hike in, the careful steps you take not to stumble. All the elements combined together put you mind in a special set that is very similar to meditation.
Walking in nature is certainly the best way to trigger the meditation mode in hiking : the noises of the forest, the sound of the wind, the birds’ chirping, the gentle crisp of your shoes on brown leaves lying on the ground, the feeling of the air on your skin, the light from the sun bouncing on stones, trees and earth makes this experience essential to the mind.
If you hike in a group, you will notice that gradually everyone will stop talking. First the efforts required can make it harder to walk and talk, but, moreover, the need to connect with nature in human silence will be met by all. Nobody will need to communicate with words as just a glance at your hiking partners will say much more than words.
Any sentence pronounced at that time will need to say the essential.
