The Rules of Pétanque

Ecole des Trois Ponts specialises in French Language Courses and  French Cookery & Pastry Courses for adults looking for a lovely setting and good food & wine in a convivial, relaxed atmosphere. It is set  in an C18th chateau near Lyons in France.

"Pétanque" or "Boules" is the French

game of bolws. It is a sport played  by

 two teams of :

      3 players named 'Triplette'

   2 players named 'Doublette'

1 player named 'Tête à tête'.

“Triplette” = each player use two identical balls.

“Doublette” = each player use three identical balls.

'tête-à-tête' = each player use three identical balls.

“Pétanque” is played with 100 % stainless steel balls correspondinq to the manufactering standards of 'Boules de Pétanque', which have a diameter of between 2 3/4 ins. (7 cm) and 3 1/8 ins. (8 cm) with a maximum weight never more thane 1lb 12 ozs (800 gr).  The 'jack' is wooden and must be between 1 ins (25 mm) and 1 1/8 ins (35 mm).

The first team is chosen by tossing a coin.  Any player in this first team chooses a starting place, and draws a semi-circle on the ground in which to stand in.  This should be between 1’ 2” (35 cm) and 1’ 8” (50 cm) in diameter.

. The player throws the 'Jack' on the ground to a distance of between 6 yards [6 m.) and 10 yards (10 m.) away. It must not be any nearer than 1 yard (1 m.) from any obstacle (wall, tree, etc...)

The player then throws his or her first ball and tries to get it as close as possible to the 'Jack'.  N.B. Both of the player’s feet must remain on the ground within the circle until the ball has made contact with the ground.

Then a player from the opposing team steps into the circle and either tries to place his or her ball closer to the 'Jack' than the opponent’s, or tries to knock his opponent’s ball further away.  The ball nearest to the 'Jack' leads.

It is then up to the players in the team which is not leading to continue until they achieve a leading ball, and so on... .

When team 2 has no more balls left then it the players of the other team throw theirs, and try to place the balls as close as possible to the 'Jack'.

When the two teams have no more balls left, the points are counted. The winning team wins as many points as it has balls which are closer to the ‘Jack’ than their opponents’ balls. A point per ball closest to the ‘Jack’.

To start the game again: a player from the winning team throws the 'Jack' from the point where it last landed.  The winner is the first team to score a total of 13 points.
